A first birthday is the only party where the guest of honour has no opinion, cannot follow an activity, and may sleep through part of it. Does a one-year-old care about the theme?
No. The theme is for the adults and the photographs, which is a perfectly good reason to have one — but it means you should choose for how it looks and how little it demands, not for how engaging it is.
How long should a first birthday party be?
Ninety minutes. Hold it in the morning, after the first nap, and end it before the second. Every first birthday that goes badly goes badly because it was scheduled across a nap.
How many people should I invite?
